Fred Jones Sanctuary

Fred Jones Nature Sanctuary is located near Portland TX and is CTC 074 on the Great Texas Birding Trail. It is an important stopover point for transgulf migrants and wintering grassland birds. It’s nine acres includes hiking trails, a pavilion and wildlife viewing areas. There is no parking lot and visitors must park along Country Road 69E. It is located on the north edge of Nueces Bay, surrounded by farmland and is managed by the Audubon Outdoor Club of Corpus Christi.

Portland Aquatic Center

The Portland Aquatic Center is a year-round outdoor facility featuring two pools. The recreation pool includes a boat slide, dual slide, bubblers, palm tree splashers, and a zero depth entry. The heated competition pool measures 25 meters by 25 yards and ranges from 4-13 feet in depth. It features diving boards, lily pads, and floating play structures. The facility also features four large shade structures with lawn furniture.

Portland Skate Park

The Portland skate park, located next to the Community Center, is open seven days a week. Hours are 8:00 a.m.-9:30 p.m. The skate park is monitored 24 hours a day via security cameras. Helmets may be rented for $2. There is a $10 deposit with a valid government-issued ID or a $20 deposit without an ID and a $2 rental fee.

Sunset Lake Park

Sunset Lake Park is a protected public park among the many outdoor recreational resources that the South Texas Coastal Bend offers citizens and visitors. It is located on the shores of Nueces Bay and Corpus Christi Bay between Portland and Corpus Christi. The park is an ecologically rich wetland and saltwater lake habitat designed and operated to provide a broad range of outdoor recreational opportunities.

Violet Andrews Park

Violet Andrews Park is another bayside destination in Portland that provides ample space to get outside and access to the water for canoeing, kayaking, and kiteboarding. A noted place to go birding in Portland, the park includes two bird watching lookouts and a paved walking trail.

Bayside Park

Hit the beach, play on the sand dunes, and relish some fun in the sun at Bayside Park in Portland. Kick back and relax as you watch the rolling tides of Corpus Christi Bay crash on the park’s soft sandy beach from the picnic area and let your youngsters have a ball on the playground.
