Early mornings at Southern Oaks are magical. I’d slip out at dawn, coffee in hand, and wander to one of the ponds. Mist hovered over the water, and the only sound was frogs croaking and birds calling. Sometimes, other campers would be quietly doing tai chi on their patios or taking their aging labrador on a slow walk.

Returning to the RV, I’d fire up the griddle and make pancakes with local honey. We’d gather on the picnic table and chat about the day’s plans: fishing, beach time, local museum visits, or just resting in a hammock.

Local activity idea: Rent kayaks and paddle the Lighthouse Lakes Trail, where you might glimpse herons, egrets, even alligators. The nearby Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is great for birdwatching, especially during crane migration.

For seniors: The resort hosts indoor walking aerobics in the clubhouse and slow-paced water aerobics in the pool. It’s low-impact and social.
