One morning, we rose early and drove to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge (nearby). We joined a guided walk where we glimpsed whooping cranes (if season), marsh birds, and deer. The guide told crane stories and conservation efforts.

We packed picnic lunches and dined in shaded areas by a marsh overlook. The kids had binoculars and a bird-identification chart; seniors sat on benches, chatting with rangers.

Returning to the resort, we cooled off in the pool, then spent time at the clubhouse playing cards and exchanging wildlife photos. The contrast of coastal resort and wild refuge made the trip extra rich.
