Fishing is central at Southern Oaks. We grabbed rods and walked to one of their four stocked ponds — catch and release is encouraged (and rules are enforced). My 12-year-old daughter landed a bass, her eyes wide with delight; my wife reeled in a perch. I got a bite but lost the hook. Meanwhile, the younger kids practiced casting on the grass nearby.

Later, we joined a fishing contest run by resort staff. The winning family got bragging rights and a little prize. That evening, we celebrated with grilled fish tacos at our campsite (from local catch) and shared the stories with new friends gathered around.

Tip: The resort might supply some basic tackle. Bring your favorite lures and extra line. Seniors often bring folding seats; kids bring nets. It’s low stress, communal, and fun for all ages.
